Hello everyone! Today I came to Zhiliangzhi Courtyard, and the topic I want to talk about is How to understand and recognize the new era. Because the theme of todays meeting is New Era Spark Plan. Before I start talking about the topic, let me talk about the three factors that touched me after I came to the Zhiliangzhi Courtyard today:
The first one is siheyuan. Because I grew up in a courtyard in Beijing, which was originally within the Forbidden City, between Jingshan and Beihai Park. When I was a teenager, I studied art in the Childrens Palace. The layout of the Childrens Palace is a combination of courtyards. The Beijing Childrens Palace Library where I was studying at that time was located in Jingshan Park, a combination of three courtyards. So in my life, the memory and feelings of the courtyard are very deep. Siheyuan is a symbol of Chinese culture, and its design concept is to realize the combination between man and heaven and earth in a limited space.
The second factor is todays date - August 18th. Xu Yuanzhong is from Hunan, and he often talks about Mao Zedong to me. The biggest thing Mao Zedong did in his later years was to launch the Cultural Revolution. The major turning point in the Cultural Revolution was his meeting with the Red Guards in Tiananmen Square on August 18, 1966. At that time, I was a member of the square. Under the Jinshui Bridge, I saw Mao Zedong very clearly. The biggest impression was that he waved his hat under the jubilation of the crowd and showed the calmness he showed to thousands of young people. Once, when my elementary school participated in the National Day, the Young Pioneers released peace doves. In any case, Mao Zedongs influence on our generation, and thinking about him are likely to accompany him throughout his life.
The third factor is Wang Yangming. This courtyard is named after Wang Yangmings To Conscience, trying to rediscover the practical significance of Wang Yangmings philosophy of mind, and because of one or another chance, I have a deepening understanding of Wang Yangmings philosophy of mind. By chance, I was teaching at National Taiwan University five or six years ago, during which time I founded the Yangmingshan Future Institute. This Yangmingshan Future Society borrows the geographical symbol and historical symbol of Yangmingshan in Taipei, and more importantly, hopes to give Wang Yangmings philosophy of mind a new historical significance so that it can be combined with the future. In fact, this also involves how to view Chinese learning and realize the combination of Chinese learning and modernization. No religious reform like Martin Luthers has ever been found in Chinese history. Because religion is not a characteristic of Chinese culture, but several reforms related to Chinese studies have actually failed. This lesson is worth summarizing. In any case, formalism, pragmatism, and utilitarian understanding must be avoided for Chinese studies, including Wang Yangmings philosophy of mind.
Next I want to start getting into the topic. I am a post-50s with a historical responsibility to link the past and the future, so I will mainly share four questions with you today:
First, what is the new era?
People of our generation have been inspired, moved, and inspired by the so-called new era many times in their lives. During the Great Leap Forward in 1958, we were told that we had entered a new era and we wanted to surpass Britain and catch up with the United States; when it came to the Cultural Revolution, anti-revisionism and anti-revisionism, and the creation of new human beings, it seemed to be a new era again. In 1978, when the reform and opening up started, people were once again looking forward to a new era. In recent years, New Era is undoubtedly the most frequently used keyword.
From my point of view, understanding the new era requires a human historical perspective, a global perspective, and even beyond the limitations of anthropocentrism. For example, about ten days ago, a planet was very close to the earth. Astronomers said that if this asteroid numbered 2019OK collides with the earth, it may cause a Tunguska explosion level of harm. The earth passed by. After the incident, the planetary science community and some research in the aerospace field began to call for strengthening the research work in the field of planetary defense worldwide. Coincidentally, last week I talked with an excellent young man from the Beijing Observatory in Xilingrad, Inner Mongolia. I asked him about the possibility of this planet colliding with the earth. I asked him, if this planet really collides with the earth, is there any way for human beings to avoid it? He said that there is no way, but the current astronomers can tell everyone the time and place of the collision at the last minute, and the impact on the earth. harm and the degree of harm to humans.
For this reason, what I would like to point out is the natural power that surpasses human ability and has a major impact on human beings behind the times that human beings talk about. Last year, I marked the 200th anniversary of Mrs. Shelleys Frankenstein on a number of occasions. This is the first science fiction novel in human history. The question is how did this book come about? Let me tell you that it was because in 1815, before the summer of 1816, a dormant volcano named Tambora in Indonesia erupted suddenly. A large amount of smoke and dust filled the sky and covered Europe, making it difficult for the sun to shine on the earth. The sharp drop in temperature made it impossible for the Shelleys and Byron to spend their summer vacation in Lake Geneva. In this cold summer, they could only sit in front of the burning fireplace, and each conceived a novel. The story conceived and told by Mrs. Shelley was the famous Frankenstein. What a long chain, the eruption of a volcano in Indonesia south of the equator in the Eastern Hemisphere, culminating in the immortal work of a young woman from England who happened to be on holiday at Lake Geneva. Later, Byrons daughter became the first person in the history of computer language, which is a later story.
What I want to say is that the beginning and end of any new era in the history of human civilization is bound to be associated with major irreversible changes in the entire history of mankind. For example - the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the emergence and spread of Christianity, the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, the outbreak and end of the Second World War, and so on. In the past 20 to 30 years, the IT and Internet revolution has indeed had the same historical status as Columbuss discovery of the New World, Magellans travel around the world, and the Industrial Revolution.
Therefore, I think the new era refers to such a historical period: the original thinking mode, industrial system, economic system, and ethical standards have undergone fundamental, systematic, and irreversible changes. This process from deconstruction to construction is New Era.
In the modern history of China, Mao Zedong created a new era. At the end of 1980 and before 1990, due to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the world economy and order were restructured, so American historian Francis Fukuyama wrote a very influential book The End of History. It is believed that from now on, the world will be dominated by liberalism and free markets. But the history of the past 30 years proves that history has no end. Humanity continues to face the possibility of entering a new age. Because human beings will consciously or unconsciously create important factors that change the times. In short, using concepts like New Era requires a scientific attitude, historical standards, and avoiding vulgarity. My first hope for the New Era Spark Project is that you seriously expand the concepts you put forward, so that you can get more supporters and advocates.
Second, the history of the 1920s has enlightenment for the new era we are facing.
The First World War ended in 1919. This war completely ended the social structure, economic structure and geopolitics that had been fully developed since the industrial revolution in the eighteenth century and the free market system in the nineteenth century; In eight years, the May Fourth Movement took place. Immediately afterwards, mankind entered the 1920s. It can be said that the history of the later 20th century, and even the evolution of the history of the early 21st century, can be traced back to the 1920s. One of the most representative indicators is that people who have influenced the political and social structure, philosophy, science and technology, economic revolution, culture and art, and lifestyle of the 20th century around the world have all entered the stage of history. They are basically the post-80s, post-90s, and post-00s of that era. For example, Lenin, Roosevelt, Churchill, Mao Zedong and even Hitler in the political field; Einstein in the scientific field; Keynes in the economics field, etc., are all representatives of that era.
In the history of human civilization, the time and regional geographical distribution of talents are uneven, and all major events that change the direction of history are also unevenly distributed in time and geographical space. The history of human civilization has repeatedly proved that every other historical period, a large number of talents will emerge in a certain period, and at the same time, there will indeed be regional centers that affect the direction of human history.
The New Era Spark Plan you put forward today is worth knowing about the diversified experiments in rural China from the 1910s to the 1920s. At that time, there were several models for realizing rural modernization, improving rural education, transforming farmers, and promoting agricultural modernization. It can be summarized as follows: (1) The Confucianism spirit reforming rural model represented by Liang Shuming (1893-1988), the location is Zou County, Shandong Province. (2) The Western civilian education model represented by Yan Yangchu (1890-1990), located in Ding County, Hebei Province. (3) The Japanese rural transformation model represented by Fu Baicui (1896-1993). Fu Baicui is an extremely legendary person. He used to be a military general in the early days of the CCP. He later left the Communist Party and did not join the Kuomintang. (4) The communist model represented by the Ruijin model, which was the prototype of the land reform later. In addition, there is also a Christian model, represented by the British missionary Bogli (1864-1915), who helped the Miao people create characters and educate them in Shimenkan, Guizhou, and finally built Shimenkan into the southwest of China. The largest cultural and educational highland in the field.
It can be said that in the 1920s, the entire spectrum of ideas and experiments for changes in rural China had been formed. Of course, it was the Soviet model that ultimately won out in history. Its further extension is the peoples commune system from the late 1950s to the 1970s.
Looking back at the above history, I hope to convey the following message: Those who have contributed to the Chinese countryside and farmers and modernization are actually representatives of unity of knowledge and action, and they are all gentlemen and sages. They have one thing in common, that is, they have the spirit of serving the world and the courage of self-sacrifice.
From the perspective of the world, 1920 did not eradicate the human key issues that caused the First World War. Economically, it led to the economic depression from 1929 to 1939; politically, it finally led to the rise of German nationalism and the rise of Hitler, and in the Asia-Pacific region, it led to a coup by young Japanese soldiers, and militarism dominated Japanese politics. It was this evolution that made World War II inevitable.
In any case, the 1920s were the most critical decade. In a few months, mankind will enter the 20s of the 21st century. Now, it is difficult or even impossible for people to predict major events in the 2020s, but they are very likely to see some major trends in economics, politics, science and technology in 2020. For this, we need to observe 2020 in a larger historical perspective.
Third, 2019 is likely to be a major historical turning point.
2019 is the 500th anniversary of Magellans voyage around the world; the 50th anniversary of Apollos moon landing; and the 50th anniversary of the Internet connection of four universities in the United States. The day when Apollo landed on the moon was July 1969. At that time, I was working on the farm of the Political Department of the Tibet Military Region. We heard the news on the short-wave radio that day, and my companions and I were all shocked. In the Tibetan plateau at that time, looking up at the starry sky, the entire Milky Way was in front of us. Compared with our farming and Apollo landing on the moon, the contrast and excitement between us are still unforgettable.
Space in the Next Fifty Years is the cover story of this years July 20 issue of The Economist. What a subject! It is also a subject that cannot be ignored in the new era. But it is a pity that among the young people around me, few people have persistent pursuit and imagination on such issues. So in my opinion, the biggest thing in 2019 is the Starlink (Starlink) plan launched by Musk to launch up to 12,000 satellites by SpaceX. In addition, what deserves more attention is Facebooks Zuckerbergs launch of Libras white paper on June 18. So one Musk, one Zuckerberg; one in the sky, one underground; they are all groundbreaking historical events.
I have to say that we have not become the leader and leader in opening up the universe and innovating in the financial system, and we have even become absentees in many fields. Why is it so difficult to produce a person like Musk among us? Why didnt the idea of Libra come from us? Looking back at the major contributions of the Chinese to human science and technology, if counted on a per capita basis, what has been recorded and affirmed by history is very limited. In mathematics, it is Zu Chongzhi, and the astronomer Guo Shoujing. I would also like to mention the conversation I had with a young astronomer from the Beijing Astronomical Observatory a few days ago. I asked what is the current ranking of Chinese astronomy in the world? He replied, probably the fourth or fifth place. In short, I think that while affirming Chinese civilization and Chinese ideological heritage, we should continue to reflect on how to make progress, innovate, and create.
Fourth, what are the characteristics of the new era?
If our 2020s is likely to be the starting point of a new era, then what are the characteristics of this era? (1) Science and technology have entered a historical stage of comprehensive integration and rapid development, leading to science and technology dominating and dominating economic development. (2) Human beings are entering an era in which material and spiritual production coexist, and the concept economy has become a new solution to the most basic material needs of human beings. It is almost no longer a big problem, and large-scale and long-term hunger will be effectively controlled. (3) Human economic organization has changed. Recently, a book One Person, One Enterprise in the United States has been very popular. Enterprises should no longer pursue scale, but pursue social value. Small is beautiful. As a result, fundamental changes have taken place in the employment model, and young people will shift from a single work model to a variety of work models. (4) The rule of law system around the world will enter a historical period of major revision, and the principles of jurisprudence and various legal systems will undergo earth-shaking changes. Code is Law - will become an unstoppable trend, the reason is very simple. Never before in history has the legal system lagged so behind the changes and developments of the real system.
It can be summed up in this way. Now, the post-industrial society, information society, and intelligent society that people often say are no longer the wolf is coming, but are really coming. It is comprehensive and displayed in front of people at an unprecedented speed.
Finally, I would like to add some of my views on Yangming Philosophy and Yangming Psychology. First of all, it is indeed necessary to have the concept and height of a human community. No matter how many Chinese there are, they are only 1.4 billion out of the current 7.8 billion. Human beings have never been so closely interdependent and indivisible as they are now.
thank you all.
