Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin claimed on June 1 that the initial deployment of the blockchain’s second-layer scaling has been “largely” successful. Kolodny, on the other hand, told Cointelegraph that he is not so convinced:

“I’m not popping champagne just yet because many of the solutions proposed so far are only on Twitter and not on the Ethereum mainnet.”

Kolodny acknowledged that there are many promising developments when it comes to ethereum’s second-layer scalability solutions. "There's been some effort around 'Optimistic Rollups,'" he explained. However, he says, no one really knows how well this works:

“Optimistic Rollups have not yet launched to mainnet, so it is too early to say how they will perform.”

As Cointelegraph reported in early November, decentralized exchange IDEX claims to have created an “infinite scaling solution” for the ethereum network based on a variation of Optimistic Rollups. While Kolodny is optimistic that an Ethereum layer 2 scalability solution is indeed possible and will succeed, he believes we are not there yet:

“Many of these ideas are relatively new, and it just takes time to implement them. After two years of intense development work, we at StarkWare will be launching on mainnet.”

When asked what held back ethereum’s second-layer scalability solutions, Kolodny said a “lack of proper integration with wallets and other tools” was partly to blame. Another reason he sees such systems not being used more widely is that developers lack confidence in any second-layer solutions:

"Finally, there is huge uncertainty for many DApp developers - which solution will go mainstream? Which one is best for them? What about all those Ethereum killers? Should they wait for Ethereum 2.0 - all of this Uncertainty leads to delayed decision-making, which also slows adoption.”
