Bitfinex Alpha | Persistent inflation weighs on global markets

Last week's worrisome inflation news didn't go away. Even in a market now with elevated inflation expectations, both the producer price index report and the consumer price index report came in above expectations. Core CPI rose 6.6% year-on-year, at a 40-year high.

The Fed still has work to do, and there is really only one lever at its disposal: monetary policy.

The stock market is now experiencing volatility almost on the scale of cryptocurrencies. Within two days, the market first rose and then fell, with a drop of more than 2%. In the bond market, the two-year yield hit a 15-year high; the yield curve remains firmly inverted as short-term Treasury bonds are higher than long-term Treasury bonds.

Our analysis of the Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index, which measures financial conditions in US money markets, debt markets, equities, and the traditional and shadow banking systems, confirms tighter-than-average conditions. Likewise, the Bond Market Options Volatility Index has surpassed levels reached during the 2020 flash crash, suggesting increasing stress in the bond market.

The ongoing sentiment is that the Fed will keep raising rates and inflicting pain on the markets until it is confident that inflation is under control or until something breaks. Interesting fact: things do seem to have changed in places like the UK and Japan. Are these early signs of a market cracking under austerity?

Sentiment is also decidedly bearish in both on-chain and crypto markets. Open interest in Bitcoin perpetual contracts has doubled since mid-April. On the one hand, this means more volatility is happening, but when we look at the BTC price trajectory historically, we think it is on track with previous bear markets, but with a twist. Long-term holders continue to buy the dip, accumulating 500,000 BTC over the past three months, in stark contrast to the weak hands seen by retail investors and short-term holders.

The question for us remains whether cryptocurrencies will emerge from the stress test of decoupling from other risk assets if we are in a new period of high volatility, or, as we have seen so far, keep pace with them conduct.

Last week, there was another $100 million huge hacker attack on the Defi platform. We delved into the risks of DeFi platforms in the learning section, as well as the slow progress in fixing some of their inherent vulnerabilities.

Bitfinex to List Highly Scalable Layer 1 Blockchain Aptos (APT)

Bitfinex, a digital token trading platform, announced that it will list Aptos' native token APT. Aptos is a Layer 1 blockchain built by Web3 infrastructure company Aptos Labs, aiming to be the industry leader in secure and high-speed transaction processing.

Aptos Labs, launched in 2021 by former Meta employees Avery Ching and Mo Shaikh, built its nascent blockchain through its original Rust-based programming language called "Move." Aptos aims to provide its users with a secure blockchain and also allows customers to change their private keys at will for added security. In tests, the Aptos blockchain has been proven to achieve a processing speed of 125K-150K TPS per second.

With these increased speed and security capabilities, Aptos will support decentralized finance (DeFi) projects such as Wormhole, a cross-chain bridge that allows users to transfer assets between Layer 1 blockchains; Topaz, an NFT marketplace; ; Blocto, a smart contract wallet popular with users.

"We are delighted to welcome Aptos Labs and APT to our thriving digital token ecosystem," said Bitfinex CTO Paolo Ardoino. "Using the blockchain to facilitate greater freedom of choice and easier access to financial products and services is at the core of Bitfinex's vision, and we are excited to welcome projects with a similar ethos."

APT deposits will open on October 18, 2022. Trading of APT will open on October 19, 2022, with trading pairs for US dollars (USD) and Tether tokens (USDt).
