Who is the new rising group "Six Samurai" that is reviving Terra?
Recently, the Terra ecosystem token, led by ANC, has been steadily rising.
Market data shows that the ANC token of Anchor reached as high as $0.028 at one point, with an intraday increase of nearly 2 times. The MIR token issued by Mirror Protocol, also part of the Luna ecosystem, approached $0.07 within the day, a three-fold increase from the intraday low.
Although the specific reason for this rise is still unclear, it may be related to the potential recovery plan of Terra Classic.
Not long ago, 6 senior full-stack engineers from Terra Allies, led by Bilbo Baggins and Solid Snake, proposed the Q3 expenditure proposal for Terra Classic.
Who are the Six Samurai?
Terra Allies is an informal organization intending to revive the Terra blockchain. Developers claiming to be the "Six Samurai" seek to bring value to the Terra Classic blockchain and promote it to its rightful level. The Six Samurai all come from the LUNC community, and they consider themselves "passionate LUNC holders and community members dedicated to revitalizing and decentralizing blockchain."
The Terra Allies advanced full-stack engineering team, known as the "Six Samurai," has proposed their Q3 expenditure proposal, emphasizing their deep passion as LUNC holders. The team is firmly committed to achieving the "true revival of the ecosystem" and promises to contribute effort and expertise to realize this goal.
According to the description of the proposal, the Six Samurai have planned a series of tasks to restore Terra, including: migrating from Columbus-5 to Columbus-6, updating the Cosmos SDK twice to catch up with the current Cosmos version, establishing the USTC testnet for the enablement of Q4 market modules, and completing the Alliance module, FeeShare module, and other functional deployments. In addition to leaders Bilbo Baggins and Solid Snake, the team also includes Not Josh C, Mango Chutney, Chopstick Sensei, and Mycetism.
According to the budget description, these developers have over ten years of comprehensive programming experience, and the community is already familiar with them. Due to the current state of the LUNC community, the regular salary expenses in this budget proposal have been significantly reduced. The salary for the four developers is $5,500 per month, while the two leaders will receive $7,500 per month. If this proposal is approved, the entire team can focus on Terra's development full-time for one quarter without any mid-term departures.
Therefore, to complete the development of the third quarter, a total budget of $116,000 is required for manpower costs and $5,000 for operational expenses.
Terra: "Battle for Succession", What's Next for the Original Development Team?
At the beginning of this month, the L1 Task Force team released version 2.1.0 upgrade proposal, which has planned a series of upgrades and maintenance for Terra Classic. The development aims to improve the performance and security of the chain, including optimizing transaction processing speed, enhancing identity verification and transaction confirmation mechanisms, fixing vulnerabilities, and more.
The upgrade roadmap for the Six Samurai is different from the roadmap for L1. In the proposal, they also state, "Our proposal competes directly with the proposal around L1, and we believe that competition and choice are beneficial to the ecosystem. We firmly believe in a free market."
For users who are unfamiliar with Terra Classic, the diverse teams within Terra may be a bit confusing. In fact, the Six Samurai is not the first team to propose to maintain Terra Classic. After the Terra fork was completed, the development of the original Terra Classic was not interrupted, and the community has been advancing it.
As early as May 2022, Terra founder Do Kwon proposed the "Rebuild Terra Ecosystem Plan," which forked the Terra chain into Terra 2.0 and the original Terra Classic. However, the Terra Classic community did not abandon this chain and formed a development team.
Subsequently, Terra Classic continued to iterate. In August 2022, Terra Classic upgraded to version V2 2 and launched the LUNC staking functionality. In December, the IBC channel from Terra Classic to Osmosis was restarted by developers, reconnecting with the Cosmos ecosystem. In the same month, proposal 11030 separated Rebel Station from TFL's backend assets and infrastructure, completely separating Terra Classic from Terraform Labs and Do Kwon, and Terra Classic shifted towards full autonomy.
Currently, the Terra Classic community is implementing a medium- to long-term technical iterative and upgrade roadmap for L1 Tasks and has formed its own L1 Task Force team around this roadmap.
And as the Six Samurai said, their governance proposal will conflict with the L1 team's development plans, and the community will be forced to make a choice.
How does the community view this?
From the feedback of the community members, there are different opinions on the "secondary title" in the LUNC community.
Some community users pointed out that the leader of "six samurai", Bilbo, has his own job, and they questioned whether Bilbo can devote his energy to Terra. Community user BullBoss 5 expressed his doubts: "Aren't you also working in the quant team? How do you manage these two positions?"
Community member Fragwuerdig shares the same opinion, saying, "Are you planning to directly lead the L1 team while working in the quant team? I asked you in a Twitter DM, but you seem unwilling (or unable) to answer this question."
Of course, there are also community members who support this proposal. Community member Adri Prans believes, "This is a more reasonable proposal and roadmap. I will vote YES, and I hope this chain can compete in the DEFI and crypto industry again."
There are also community members who hope that the Terra community can bridge the differences and work together. Jook knights wrote on the governance forum, "I hope to see more collaboration between this team and the current L1 team."
