The team conducted interviews about their NFT mortgage market. I think these loans could become quite popular as the NFT ecosystem continues to grow, so I really appreciate this interview. You can see the outcome of our conversation below.

NFTfi.comWMP: So, what is NFTfi.com's elevator pitch? Why do NFT secured loans, and why now? Do you have a moment of enlightenment that makes you jump into action?

: Hi William, thanks for taking the time to chat with us.

NFTfi is a simple peer-to-peer marketplace for NFT collateralized loans. NFTfi allows you to stake any ERC-721 NFT asset as collateral for a loan, or make loans to other users on its NFT. Once the loan is initiated, the NFTfi will hold the assets in custody. If the borrower repays the loan, the asset will be transferred back to them - if not, the asset will be transferred to the lender. In the traditional art world, this is known as a non-recourse loan.

At the moment of enlightenment, I probably realized that NFTfi.com can still be used!

Just kidding, this is a conversation I had with Mads back in February. I called to get his opinion on ETH price as I was opening a Maker CDP. We also talked about needing a way to unlock the value in our NFT collection. We did a lot of research and realized nothing would do what we wanted. For us, P2P price discovery and user-driven marketplaces are essential, and we have a lot of ideas to help support liquidity more broadly. Alas, we decided to build it ourselves. Two weeks later, we had the first version of the smart contract ready. It was an amazing experience, and it just felt right when we discussed the original Product MVP. This is a need we all feel firsthand and have heard from many.

So why now?

Well, we feel that the NFT market will develop rapidly, however liquidity is a big problem in the NFT space. Even in mature art and collectibles markets, there is a huge need for liquidity, and non-recourse loans are a common method used by museums. There are amazing opportunities for those dabbling in the NFT space to buy, sell and profit, but anytime liquidity can be an issue, maximize this opportunity. It could also be an artist looking to finance a larger work or collaboration. We think liquidity can help in a lot of places if done right. We hope to grow with the market here and help improve the space for all participants. This is the management principle.

NFTfi.comWMP: How much lending activity has there been in the market so far? What kind of NFTs have you observed people using as collateral at such an early age?

We have only been live on the mainnet for less than a month, and we have only shared the platform with the community for more than 2 weeks.

We’ve seen 110 listings so far, 38 of which resulted in a loan (35% conversion rate). So far, our total loan volume is 26.3ETH, growing by 35% approximately every 3 days (see graph below).

Our 3 largest loans so far are:Cryptokitties - Schrödinger's cat

 JOY - Flower & Toad: 3ETH for 30 days.

Josie - Your's Truly #5: 3ETH for 30 days.

: 3 ETH in 30 days.

  • If we divide by project, it looks very similar.

  • CryptoKitties: 6. 91 ETH Total Loan Amount

  • JOY: 4ETH total loan amount

Josie: 3.6ETH total loan amount

As you can see, older projects, especially art ones, seem to be doing well. Also, there is a lot of interest in Avastars and Cryptovoxels.

NFTfi.comWMP: Where do you think the NFT economy will go in the next 5 to 10 years?

Over the next 5 to 10 years, we expect the NFT economy to grow substantially. There are a lot of forces driving it. The growth in the number and quality of crypto artists is sensational. We expect this trend to continue, with more and more established artists entering the NFT space.

We also want to see real world assets being tokenized as NFTs. There are already a few projects working on this. The legal issues associated with the tokenization of real world assets are not trivial, but we hope someone can sort this out :-)

We also look forward to seeing the continued DeFiization of the NFT space. The explosion of currency LEGO that we have seen in the DeFi space makes us very happy to see the combinatorial explosion of incorporating NFTs into existing DeFi protocols.

In the end, we expect to see at least one blockchain-based game gain significant mass-market traction.

NFTfi.comWMP: What are the upcoming sections of NFTfi.com? Are there any new features or updates in the works that users can look forward to?

Let's start with the basics - we've had an amazing amount of user feedback so far. I can't thank them all enough. Such as specifying required loan terms, supporting more wallets, and better account pages to push/share/market your assets. Bundling is also an idea we really like.

In the long run, our mission is to increase the overall liquidity of non-futures markets and provide more data to enable non-futures collectors and investors to make more informed decisions when valuing non-futures, so that The next market maturity cycle is realized. Of course, this can also include some aspects of automation and scale. There are now four major markets: digital artwork, collectibles, games, and real-world assets all fused with NFTs and plugged directly into the platform. In this explosive development, how to stay ahead and serve the community well will be a huge and meaningful challenge.

NFTfi.comWMP: When you look around, are there any other NFT projects that your team is very excited about right now?

Avastars

It's hard to pick a favourite. But since you asked, we had to answer! They include:

NBA Top Shots

We love their work, they push for better standards and keeping everything on-chain. We’ve seen that users are more willing to make long-term loans to projects that store all their metadata on-chain. Other than that, they're just cool!

Chainlink

Even though it's built on Flow and not Ethereum, it's super exciting to get such a big project off the ground. We have already seen people taking out loans on NFTfi to prepare liquidity for initial launch. We want to join Chainlink because. We think this project, and projects like it, will pave the way for more traditional game companies to integrate NFTs in their products.

Thanks for reading, and please be creative (on-chain/off-chain)!
